Specialized YMCA Camping Programs

Find out more about YMCA Camps

Leadership Development

YMCA Camps offers a highly developed, two-year leadership development program for youth to experience a wide range of technical and counselling skills development at camp and in the outdoors. Highly skilled staff guide leadership campers in building personal assets such as assertiveness, caring, self-esteem and the ability to plan and make decisions. Participants in this program must possess a motivated, mature attitude with a desire to learn and participate fully in many different situations.

Out Trips

YMCA Out Trip campers are introduced to a wide variety of experiences to develop self-confidence through outdoor travel. Campers learn about teambuilding and respecting others as well as nature itself, and develop positive leadership skills. Campers begin their trip learning how to prepare for an extended out trip, with routes carefully selected to match the level of ability and level of challenge sought as well as the safety and specific needs of each group. All trips will be led by experienced qualified counselors who are also expert wilderness guides. Pre trip meetings will be held for all registered campers to discuss preparation.

YMCA 'ESL at Camp'

The comfortable atmosphere of YMCA summer camp is perfect for incorporating ESL instruction. Campers enjoy traditional, age-appropriate camp activities along with three hours of language lessons a day from qualified instructors. Campers are grouped in cabins with other ESL students, and instruction groups are based on level of English proficiency. All students who attend YMCA ESL Camp must have sufficient medical insurance. ESL is offered in July and August at YMCA Camp Elphinstone on BC's Sunshine Coast. Contact the YMCA Camps office for more information: 604-939-9622, email: camps at vanymca.org.

Other Specialized Camps

In partnership with organizations such as the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Western Pediatric AIDS Society, YMCA Camps also provides other programs for young people with medical conditions who want to experience the outdoors and the challenge and joy offered by a camping experience. Please contact YMCA Camp Services for more information on these and other specialized camping programs for children and youth.
