... But not our commitment to you, your family and our Langara community.
Since we opened our doors as the South Slope Family YMCA in 1978, we've been dedicated to the positive development of people from all walks of life: men, women, kids, students, families, older adults and anyone who wants to build health and grow stronger.
But as we look to celebrating our 30th year of service to the South Vancouver area, it’s time for a change:
“We want the name of this facility to reflect who we are, in our continuing role with the Langara community and with a name most people recognize,” says GM Vinh Truong. “As part of our 30th birthday’ celebrations in 2008, it makes sense to start out as the Langara Family YMCA.”
The new name also makes sense as part of the local configuration of community facilities: from Langara College to the adjacent golf course, housing complex and of course, on to the new Canada Line rapid transit stop at Cambie and 49th set for completion by 2010.
“Since our’ stop on the Canada Line will be Langara Station-49th, between the Marine Drive and Oakridge–41st stops,” says Truong, “Everyone will be able to find us quickly and easily. We want people to know they’re invited to drop by our Y anytime, because everyone is welcome here.”
The Langara Family YMCA opened its doors to Vancouver's Langara/Oakridge Community in 1978.
