Offered by the YMCA in partnership with BC Housing, the STEP to Work program is a summer employment opportunity for youth 15 to 18 years old who live in BC Housing. Youth must be in the public housing portfolio to be eligible to apply. Participants experience a job for the first time, develop employability skills, learn positive work values and build healthy foundations for future employment.
The YMCA provides:
· Pre-employment training for summer youth employees.
· Minimum wage for youth employees for six weeks of work (four days per week, six hours per day).
· Support for youth employees and employers throughout the summer.
Employers provide:
· A six-week work placement (four days per week, six hours per day) for youth employees in July and August.
· On-the-job support and guidance for youth employees.
Youth employees provide:
· Six weeks of work dedicated to the employer's business or organization.
· Enthusiasm, skills, motivation and willingness to learn.
Program participants receive:
· Employment and lifeskills training, along with opportunities to develop leadership abilities.
· FoodSafe, Superhost, WHMIS and First Aid/CPR certification.
· Support from a mentor
· Paid work experience for their resumes, and to use in future job searches.
· An opportunity to work within the YMCA, other non-profit organizations, or privately-owned businesses.
