Are you:
- Between the ages of 15 and 30?
- In need of assistance to overcome employment barriers?
- A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident?
- Out of school, whether as a graduate or non-graduate of secondary or
post-secondary school?
Then the YMCA is looking for you as a candidate for the Federal Public
Sector Youth Internship Program. This program gives you the tools to break
the vicious cycle of “no job, no experience; no experience, no job.”
You must also:
- Not have previously participated in the Federal Public Sector Youth
Internship Program or another internship program under the federal
government's Youth Employment Strategy.
- Be legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial/territorial
legislation and regulations.
- Not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
These internships provide you with a paid, supported, full-time work
experience in a federal government department or organization. During your
internship, you'll be paired with a mentor who will act as your guide and
advisor. These internships are offered throughout Metro Vancouver and the
Fraser Valley and in Victoria, BC in a wide variety of fields.
There are internship opportunities available to suit your interests and
career goals. Internships normally last nine months for non-graduates and
six months for secondary school graduates and post-secondary school
graduates. (The first four weeks of internship for non-graduates is spent in
preparatory training provided by the YMCA.)
Past placements in BC include: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Citizenship
and Immigration Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Department of National
Defense and Correctional Services of Canada.
Many non-graduate young people are not immediately ready for the workplace
and need counseling and support services in order to get off to a good start
in the host organization. The YMCA provides assessment and counseling
service for non-graduates, and at least four weeks of preparatory training.
Throughout the internship, a YMCA counselor will visit the intern regularly,
and will also support and assist the mentor on request. Secondary school
graduates also benefit from YMCA assessment services and site visits.
