RAISING HEALTHY KIDS

Mission

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is a charity dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community.

YMCA/Steve Nash Basketball League

In partnership with Basketball BC, the YMCA is pleased to present the YMCA/Steve Nash Basketball League which offers both co-ed teams for grades 2–9 and girls-only teams for grades 6-9. Our volunteer coach-driven league is non-scoring and provides kids an opportunity to have a fun and rewarding experience while enjoying the game of basketball.

NEW! Zonal Registration System

Our league has moved to a zonal registration system. All players now register as individuals in one of five zones (see registration zone map for more information on zone boundaries) and teams will be formed by YMCA staff approximately one week prior to the first practice. Coaches will contact players advising of practice day, time and location once rosters have been finalized. This new system will ensure that more children have the opportunity to participate in a YMCA experience.

Cancellations

Cancellations may occur should gym space become unavailable. In the event this occurs, the YMCA will provide as much notice to coaches as possible. Alternate practice locations are not available. If required, alternate game locations will be communicated as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that schools may cancel our use of a gym due to a school function and may not inform us until the last minute. Use of school gyms may be cancelled at any time if facilities are misused or abused. Younger children should be supervised at all times when on school grounds or in school facilities.

Rules

The "Rules Manual" was developed to explain the philosophy and rules of our League. It is provided as an aid for coaches, referees, players and parents in the YMCA/Steve Nash Basketball program.

Philosophy of YMCA Sports Leagues

The goals and objectives of YMCA Sports Leagues are based on the following eight fundamentals:

Participation:Everyone plays an equal amount
Fun:We play sports to have fun
Fitness:Regular cardiovascular exercise is important for a lifetime
Skills:Emphasize the fundamentals
Teamwork:Focus on co-operation, not competition
Fair Play:Fair play involves respect
Family Involvement:Youth sports are family programs
Volunteer:Volunteers are the key

Family Involvement

We encourage parents and families the participants to be actively involved with their child's team both in practice and games. Youth sports are family programs at the YMCA and your active involvement is huge encouragement to coaches and participants.
