In the 1990s, the World Alliance of YMCAs united a confederation of over 12,000 local YMCA associations from 130 countries. While each YMCA is independent and reflects its own unique social, political, economic and cultural situation, we share a commitment to health, community service, social change, human development and youth leadership.
Through co-operative and collaborative work here at home, with our partner associations and in other countries, we help promote peace, equality, respect, self-sufficiency and sustainability throughout the world. The YMCA of Greater Vancouver encourages awareness and understanding of international issues on many program levels, including:
| · | Education on international issues and global peace efforts for YMCA staff members and volunteers, and specialized activities for various program participants offered year-round. |
| · | Global awareness and cultural exchange initiatives to inform and support children, youth, men and women from all cultural backgrounds, in each of the communities we serve locally and internationally. |
| · | YMCA World Peace Week activities, including free classroom and community support, an annual 'Power of Peace' event and the awarding of YMCA Peace Medals. |
| · | YMCA Youth Peace Network, to increase local knowledge and build youth leadership internationally on creating a more peaceful, just and equal world. |
This project is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the YMCA Endowment Fund.
